ARC Marine Tests Low-Carbon Cement In Marine Projects

Sustainable Concrete Testing Launches in UK Marine Construction

Marine engineering company ARC Marine has partnered with low-carbon cement manufacturer Material Evolution to test an alternative to conventional concrete in offshore and coastal construction. This collaboration will incorporate Material Evolution’s MevoCem, an ultra-low carbon cement, into ARC Marine’s products for aquaculture, coastal defense, and offshore energy.

The initial batch of MevoCem has been delivered and will be tested in challenging marine conditions to evaluate its durability and performance against traditional Portland cement-based concrete. If successful, the companies intend to expand production and broader application of the material.

“This partnership marks a crucial step towards developing sustainable marine infrastructure,” states Tom Birbeck, ARC Marine’s CEO. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Material Evolution and explore how MevoCem can enhance our products' performance.”

Material Evolution’s CEO, Dr. Elizabeth Gilligan, emphasizes the environmental benefits of the partnership. “By collaborating with ARC Marine, we are promoting the use of innovative, sustainable materials in essential marine construction projects,” she notes.

Cement production accounts for about 8% of global carbon emissions. Material Evolution’s method, utilizing industrial byproducts and patented alkali fusion technology, reportedly cuts emissions by up to 85% compared to standard Portland cement. The company has recently launched a production facility in Wrexham, Wales, with a yearly capacity of 120,000 tonnes.

Based in the UK, ARC Marine focuses on ecological engineering for marine settings. Its products, including artificial reef structures, foster biodiversity while safeguarding offshore infrastructure. The company has deployed over 2,000 reef cubes in seven countries, creating habitats for over 190 marine species.

If the trials are successful, the partnership could lead to a wider implementation of MevoCem in ARC Marine’s projects, providing a more sustainable solution for marine construction.
